NIPT Test in Nepal: What to Expect at Medex Neo Clinic
Every expectant parent wants the same reassurance — that their baby is developing well. NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Test) is a widely used and highly accurate screening test, but many parents are unsure what it looks for or how safe it is. At Medex Neo Clinic in Naxal, Kathmandu, NIPT screening is carried out confidentially through our accredited laboratory partner, using a simple blood sample taken from the mother with no risk to the baby. This guide explains what the test screens for, how the process works, and what you will need to bring with you.
Note: NIPT at Medex Neo Clinic is offered strictly as a health screening test. Testing is carried out only with the patient's informed consent, and supporting documents may be requested at the time of registration.
What Does NIPT Screen For?
During pregnancy, small fragments of the baby's DNA circulate naturally in the mother's bloodstream. NIPT analyses these fragments from a single blood sample and screens for three specific conditions with a high degree of accuracy and no procedural risk.
1. Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21)
The most common condition NIPT screens for. It can be screened for with high sensitivity from week 10 of pregnancy onward.
2. Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18)
A less common but more serious condition that is associated with significant developmental complications.
3. Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13)
Also associated with serious developmental effects, and screened for using the same single blood sample.
4. Health Screening Only
NIPT at Medex is used solely to screen for the three health conditions listed above. It is not used for any other purpose, and no other information is reported.

Suitable for: Most pregnancies from week 10 onward, whether you have been assessed as low risk or simply want additional reassurance. Our doctor will confirm that the test is appropriate for you before the sample is taken.

Who Should Consider NIPT?
NIPT is suitable for most pregnancies. It is particularly worth discussing with your doctor if:

- You have a family history of inherited conditions
- An earlier screening test returned a result your doctor would like to follow up on
- You have previously had a pregnancy affected by one of the conditions listed above
- You would simply like the added reassurance of a highly accurate screening test
- You would prefer to avoid invasive testing where possible

What should I bring with me? A valid identity document, and any recent medical records or reports relating to your pregnancy if you have them. These help us register you correctly and issue an accurate report.
Do I have to give consent? Yes. Your written, informed consent is required before any sample is taken. Our doctor will explain the test fully first, and you are free to ask questions or decline at any point.
When can I take the test? From week 10 of pregnancy onward.
Is it safe for my baby? Yes. It involves a blood sample taken from the mother only. Nothing goes near the baby, and there is no risk of miscarriage.
