Yes, the vaccination appointments arranged by MedEx are flexible to accommodate your schedule. We work closely with the patient care team and the hospital to ensure that we have up-to-date information on vaccination status and doctor availability. A medical certificate is an official document issued by a healthcare professional that confirms an individual's health status. It may be required for travel abroad to ensure the traveler is fit to undertake the journey and doesn't pose a health risk to others.
It is possible that there will be a requirement for follow-up after vaccination, depending on the vaccination service you receive. Some vaccines may require additional doses to ensure their effectiveness. If any follow-up doses are necessary, our medical team will notify you in advance. Additionally, if you have received a vaccination in your home country and require a follow-up dose while in Thailand, you can seek assistance from MedEx, and we will be happy to help.
Frequently Asked Questions About Vaccination
When considering whether to get the Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine for travelling in Southeast Asia, it's essential to understand the risk factors and recommendations. JE is a mosquito-borne disease prevalent in parts of Asia, including Southeast Asia. The virus's life cycle involves pigs as amplifying hosts, transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, active at night, mainly in rural areas where flooding irrigation is practiced or near the paddy field. While most infections result in no symptoms or mild illness, a very minority of severe cases can lead to encephalitis, with potentially fatal consequences. The risk of JE varies depending on factors such as duration of stay, activities planned, and exposure to rural environments during peak transmission periods. Recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US CDC advise vaccination for travelers spending extended periods in endemic areas, particularly those engaging in outdoor activities during transmission seasons. Ultimately, the decision to get the JE vaccine should be based on individual risk assessment and discussions with a qualified travel medicine doctor to weigh the benefits, risks, and personal preferences.
The risk of dengue infection among travelers in Southeast Asia is approximately 1% per month, with the majority (more than 90%) of cases being mild and fatalities rare. Prevention involves using DEET-containing insect repellent to avoid mosquito bites, as dengue-transmitting mosquitoes are prevalent even in urban areas. While two dengue vaccines are available in Thailand, they are not recommended for travelers. If bitten, not all mosquitoes carry the virus, and symptoms may range from none to mild fever. Seeking medical attention is advised if experiencing high fever during travel. Most hospitals in Thailand and Southeast Asia can manage dengue cases, though severe cases may require referral to higher-level care. Despite the risk, travelers should understand and manage risks appropriately, acknowledging that risks exist in various aspects of travel beyond disease transmission.
If bitten or scratched by a dog, cat, or monkey while travelling, immediate action is crucial due to the risk of rabies. Cleaning the wound promptly with antiseptic or soap and water minimizes this risk. The severity of exposure determines the necessary treatment, which is categorized by the World Health Organization into three levels.
Category | Type of contact | Post-exposure treatment |
I | Touching or feeding animals, licks on intact skin | No vaccine is needed if history is reliable |
II | Nibbling of uncovered skin, minor scratches or abrasions without bleeding | Immediate rabies vaccination |
III | Single or multiple transdermal bites or scratches, licks on broken skin; contamination of mucous membrane with saliva from licks, contacts with bats. | Immediate vaccination and administration of rabies immunoglobulin |
